Now I will do nothing but listen,
To accrue what I hear into this song, to let sounds contribute toward it.
I hear bravuras of birds, bustle of growing wheat, gossip of flames, clack of sticks cooking my meals,
I hear the sound I love, the sound of the human voice,
I hear all sounds running together, combined, fused or following,
Sounds of the city and sounds out of the city, sounds of the day and night…
- Walt Whitman, Song Of Myself
Is the soundscape of the world an indeterminate composition over which we have no control, or are we its composers and performers, responsible for giving it form and beauty? Orchestration is a musician’s business – but isn’t it up to us to undergo a paradigm shift and start seeing – not the music in the global soundscape – but the global soundscape as music?
How has the soundscape of the borough changed in your lifetime? Do you have any recordings of times gone by? Come to think of it, do you want to record the present? Would you like to submit sounds to the archive?
We are just starting out …
